The category 1 storm Hurricane Hanna—the first hurricane of this year’s Atlantic season—hit the state on Saturday, making landfall on Padre Island, south of Corpus Christi, with winds of up to 90 mph. In Florida’s Lee and Charlotte counties—two of the areas hardest hit by the storm—more than 700 people were rescued by first responders, according to the office of Governor Ron DeSantis. One survivor, a woman named Kim who spoke with the BBC, said: “It was terrifying, because you’re helpless. “We had no [phone] service to call anyone, but no one would have come anyway,” she added. Another woman in Orlando, who wasn’t identified, exited her home through a window during the hurricane....

Ida strengthened into a tropical storm with 65 mph winds Friday morning, and was then reclassified as a hurricane in the afternoon using data from an Air Force Reserve aircraft. As of a 5 p.m. ET update from the National Hurricane Center, Ida is showing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph, with higher gusts, and moving northwest at 15 mph. The NHC anticipates Ida will grow stronger over the next couple days as it approaches Louisiana....

Nicole made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane just south of Vero Beach at 3 a.m. Thursday, with sustained winds around 75 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. The hurricane had already battered the Bahamas and caused widespread flooding earlier in the week. The hurricane eventually weakened to a tropical storm and then a tropical depression, but it continues to bring heavy rains to parts of the southeast....
