“Taking away the money from your sister’s birthday party to replace your iPad is entirely appropriate,” a user commented. “And judging by your parents’ behavior, your sister sorely needs these natural consequences or else she’ll keep being enabled.”

The anonymous teen, who goes only by the username u/AdVisible887, published the post titled “AITA for taking the money I had for my sister’s party so I can replace the iPad she stole?” and received more than 13,800 upvotes and 1,500 comments.

In the post, the 17-year-old explained that her 15-year-old sister has a habit of taking things that don’t belong to her. She said their dad has talked to her about going in her sister’s bedroom and taking things, grounded her and even made her pay for the items she lost but that her sister doesn’t listen.

According to Healthline, it is not uncommon for younger children to steal without understanding the consequences. Older children who steal tend to do so as a way to show off to friends or to showcase wit.

But when this action becomes persistent, the individual might be suffering from kleptomania, or the sudden impulse to steal items.

The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry recommends that adults get involved if the behavior is persistent to ensure the child or teen is not suffering from behavioral developmental problems or kleptomania.

In the now-viral post, the teenager explained that their mom always takes her younger sister’s side and makes up excuses for her. She also wrote that her dad, fed up with the stealing, bought a small safe for her to keep her important items such as jewelry and gifts she received from her boyfriend Caleb, 19.

She said that Caleb often buys her stuff but that the majority of it has been stolen by her sister.

“The most precious gift I have for [sic] him is an iPad pro he gave me for my 17th birthday on feb 14,” the post read. “I love to draw, is my hobby, my form of expression and how I relax.”

She wrote that Caleb also custom painted a case for the iPad and that when she is not home, she leaves the iPad locked up in the safe.

“I spent two days at my brother’s(21M) apartment planning my lil sister’s birthday party, when I came back I went to take the iPad to sketch some ideas but I only found the case,” the post read. “I thought I had leave [sic] it somewhere else but I was sure I didn’t, I also never took the case because is my favorite thing.”

She explained that she was unable to find the iPad even after looking all around the house and confirming she did not leave it at Caleb’s house.

“When my family came back I was awfully crying in the kitchen. My dad asked what happened and I told her that I couldn’t find my iPad,” the post read. “My mom said very lazily ‘your sister lost it in the train yesterday.’”

The teen’s mom explained that her sister took the iPad to school and lost it but that she should “let it go” because “accidents happen.” The teen wrote that she was “livid” and told her parents that her sister somehow unlocked her safe and stole the tablet.

“My mom told me to shut up and to never call my sister a theft [sic] again,” the teen wrote. “My dad got involved and after much fighting he said that my sister had to pay me back, my sister just said that she didn’t had money and attempted to go to her room.”

The teen proceeded to tell her sister that she would just take the money she had set aside for her birthday party and keep it to purchase another iPad.

“She came right at me and told me that I couldn’t do it, my mom sided with her and demanded the money but I said ‘‘No, she owes me. I get to keep it’ and ran to my room,” the teen wrote.

She said her father gave her permission to buy another iPad and that her older brother transferred her the money.

“My sister has been crying because she just lost her sweet sixteen party and says a tablet is worth much less than that,” the post read.

In several updates to the post, the teen explained that her older brother came over to talk to their parents about the stealing and admitted their sister was also stealing from him when she went over to his place.

In the update, the teen said her sister claimed she couldn’t help it and that she acts before she thinks. The sister also admitted to stealing the iPad and said she wasn’t intending on hurting anyone but just wanted to bring it to school to brag about it.

The sister also went to her room and came out with “a bunch of things” from her, their brother, their cousins, her friends, and even one of Caleb’s rings.

“We don’t know how she did all of this and she refuses to give that information, she also refuses to tell me how she broke into my safe. My parents are outside talking alone and my dad let Caleb spend the night here with me.”

More than 1,500 users commented on the teen’s post, many calling out her younger sister’s inappropriate behavior and their mother for enabling her.

“Keep the money. Get a new iPad. Change the code on the safe and don’t tell anyone,” one user suggested.

“Her sister has Kleptomania or something that’s triggered by impulse stealing, but it’s seems she’s a little premeditated with her actions,” a user wrote. “Super concerning, especially when her Mum in enabling it so much”
