Coach Gary Pinkel announced Monday that Franklin will miss 3-to-5 weeks with a sprained right shoulder. After Franklin was knocked out of No. 14 Missouri’s 41-26 upset victory over Georgia Saturday, initial reports surfaced that he had a separated shoulder and would miss six weeks, which essentially would have sidelined him the rest of the regular season.
Coach Gary Pinkel said redshirt freshman Maty Mauk will start on Saturday at home against No. 22 Florida. Although Mauk has thrown only six passes in his young career, Pinkel said he won't change the offense to accommodate a less-experienced player.
"You don't want him to be a robot out there," Pinkel said. "You've got good people around you, just go play. He's going to be nervous, he'll do fine."
Mauk was 3-for-3 for 23 yards and ran three times for 12 yards after replacing Franklin in the fourth quarter at Georgia. Redshirt sophomore Corbin Berkstresser, who started four games last season as Franklin struggled through an injury-filled season, will be Mauk's backup Saturday.
If Franklin returns in three weeks, he would be able to play in the team's final three games, starting with the Nov. 9 contest at Kentucky. Missouri's next three games are at home—against Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Pinkel said Franklin had been playing "as good as any quarterback we've ever had."
LONG CHOSEN AS PLAYOFF CHAIR
Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long will be the first chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, and the rest of the 13-member panel that will decide which teams play for the 2014 national championship will be officially revealed Wednesday.
The announcement of Long to lead the committee and act as a spokesman was made Monday. A news conference will be held Wednesday at the College Football Playoff's new offices in Irving, Texas, with Long and executive director Bill Hancock unveiling the rest of the members.
The names of the other members expected to be on the committee, however, already have been reported by The Associated Press and other media outlets.
Long is among five current athletic directors, along with West Virginia's Oliver Luck, Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez, Clemson's Dan Radakovich and Southern California's Pat Haden.
Also expected on the committee are: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; retired Lt. Gen Michael Gould; former Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese; former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne; former Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington coach Tyrone Willingham; former NFL and Mississippi quarterback Archie Manning; former NCAA vice president Tom Jernstedt; and former college sports writer Steve Wieberg.
The committee will pick the four teams to play in the national semifinals in the new postseason system that will replace the Bowl Championship Series after this season. The winners will play about a week later for the national championship.
FLORIDA’S JONES OUT FOR SEASON
Florida coach Will Muschamp couldn't recall going through a season like this one. The 22nd-ranked Gators will be without running back Matt Jones for the remainder of the year, the latest addition to the team's lengthy injury report.
Jones had surgery Monday morning to repair torn meniscus in his left knee. Jones injured his knee during Saturday's 17-6 loss at LSU.
"Very unfortunate," Muschamp said. "I hate it for Matt. He's a great young man. To go through what he's been through ... and then to have this setback is just disheartening for all of us."
Jones, a 6-2, 226-pound sophomore from Seffner, carried 79 times for 339 yards and two touchdowns this season. He missed most of fall practice and the season opener while recovering from a viral infection. He worked his way back into shape and into the starting lineup.
He had costly fumbles in each of his first two games, prompting Muschamp to open up the job. Jones responded with a 176-yard performance at Kentucky, essentially solidifying his spot atop the depth chart.
Now, the Gators will turn to fourth-year junior Mack Brown, who leads the team with 340 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and freshman Kelvin Taylor.
Florida plays at No. 14 Missouri on Saturday. "We'll get the next guy up," Muschamp said. "We've recruited well at the position, so those guys will get their opportunities and they need to be ready in all situations."
OU LOSES DT TO BACK INJURY
Oklahoma starting nose tackle Jordan Phillips likely is out for the season with a back injury.
Stoops said during his weekly press conference that Phillips will undergo surgery on Tuesday. Stoops also said that linebacker Corey Nelson, who tore a pectoral muscle on Oct. 5 against TCU, also will have surgery Tuesday. Nelson already had been ruled out for the season.
Phillips, a 6-6, 324-pound redshirt sophomore, didn't play against TCU or on Saturday against Texas due to back problems. He started the first four games for No. 18 Oklahoma and had been a pleasant surprise for the Sooners, recording seven tackles, including two for loss, and one sack.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Wade started against TCU and Texas in Phillips' absence.
HUSKERS, DUCKS TO PLAY IN 2016, ’17
Nebraska has delayed games against Tennessee for a decade but found a substitute opponent in the University of Oregon.
Nebraska officials say Tennessee had asked to delay their 2016 and 2017 games, which have been rescheduled to Sept. 12, 2026, in Lincoln and Sept. 11, 2027, in Knoxville.
The Lincoln game with Oregon is scheduled for Sept. 17, 2016, and the Eugene game is set for Sept. 9, 2017.
The Huskers delayed their 2016 game against Wyoming to accommodate the schedule change. It's now set for Sept. 10, 2016, at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
Nebraska has beaten Oregon five times in their six games. They last met in 1986 in Lincoln.
BAHAMAS WILL HOST BOWL GAME
College football is Bahamas bound. A new bowl game will be played in Nassau, starting in 2014. The Bahamas Bowl will be part of a series bowls shared by the Mid-American Conference, American Athletic Conference, Sun Belt, Mountain West and Conference USA.
The game will be played at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium, likely before Christmas, and the deal with the conferences runs for six years.
The MAC will be the anchor team for the first four seasons. The American will provide the opponent for the MAC in 2014 and '16. Conference USA will send a team to the game in 2015 and the Sun Belt in 2017. The matchups for 2018 and '19 are to be determined.
Last week, the leagues announced a similar arrangement with a new bowl in Boca Raton, Fla., to be played at Florida Atlantic University's stadium.
The conferences are expected to soon announce the creation of another game to be played at Marlins Park in Miami and anchored by the American Athletic Conference.
The addition of those three games will give the Mid-American five guaranteed bowl spots from 2014-2019, along with the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, Ala., Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise and Camellia Bowl in San Diego.
