Before Game 1 of the American League division series on Thursday, both players got nice recognition as part of the team, coming out to a thunderous ovation for the ceremonial first pitch, with Wieters catching, of course.
Both players were in full uniform to take part in the festivities.
Machado, an All-Star and Gold Glove winner last year, last played on August 11, before right knee surgery ended his season. Wieters was an All-Star this year despite playing only 26 games, as he was voted the American League’s starting catcher by the fans. Wieters was hitting .308 with five home runs when he was lost for the season to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.
