“For decades, we have spoken out in opposition to the usage of negative stereotypes, and been active in protests against such misuse,” the Rev. Linda Jaramillo said in a news release. “We will continue to journey in solidarity with our brothers and sisters until this part of our body of humanity is honored and respected.”

The UCC also called for the Redskins to make similar changes at the denomination’s biennial General Synod gathering Monday at the Cleveland Convention Center.

“That’s like George Wallace screaming segregation now and forever,” Graylan Hagler, a pastor at Plymouth Congregational UCC in Washington, D.C., said, via Cleveland.com. “When I stand in front of you, I’m not your mascot. I am not a Redskin.”

The group, which has nearly a million members, is partnered with the UCC Council for American Indian Ministries and the Cleveland Committee.

Recently, the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska announced that it will boycott all FedEx services as long as the company continues to sponsor the Redskins.
