It was the closest finish since 1992. And it denied Castroneves a chance to join the most select group in racing history: four-time winners at Indy. Those drivers are legendary in IndyCar racing: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears.

Hunter-Reay also was the first American to win since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

In 2015, Juan Pablo Montoya joined the select list of multiple winners at Indy. His first victory came in 2000. After a stint in Sprint Cup racing, Montoya won for the first time in 15 years — a record for the Memorial Day race.
