Brownstown Elementary School said a pumpkin depicting President Donald Trump was removed after a parent complained.

Staff at the school in Brownstown, Indiana, hold a pumpkin decorating contest every fall to raise money for charity and historical, cartoon and pop culture figures are often serve as inspiration, a school official said.

But after this year’s entries were posted on the school’s Facebook page this week, a parent complained that some parts of the display were offensive. The image has since been removed.

Holly Ellis told WISH-TV that one of the pictures showed a display that featured a pumpkin depicting Donald Trump. He was seen with a banner reading “Vote for Trumpkin.”

While she didn’t find the depiction of the president to be inappropriate, she said it was the wall behind the pumpkin, the Trump 2020 flag and the Make America Great Again slogans on a hat and mug that were “the bigger issue.”

She told the station: “If it had just been the pumpkin dressed as the president by itself, I have no issue with that. I really don’t. But it was everything else on top of it.”

Ellis, who is a teacher, added that she knows political views should not be shared in a classroom. Ellis said she posted a comment expressing her concerns about he display and it was later taken down.

Tim Taylor, the superintendent of Brownstown Central Community Schools, apologized to anyone offended by the display.

He said the school immediately removed the Trump pumpkin from the display after becoming aware of the offence it had caused.

In a statement to Newsweek, he said: “Every fall, the Brownstown Elementary staff has a pumpkin decorating contest as a charity fundraiser. A variety of historical, pop-culture, storybook, and cartoon characters are typically depicted and were depicted this year.

“One of the pumpkins this year depicted President Trump. A parent expressed concern and, when it was realized that the display had offended a member of the community, the school immediately removed the pumpkin.”

Taylor added that school events aim to remain “apolitical” and “inclusive.” He added: “The goal of this and all Brownstown-Central School events is to maintain an apolitical and inclusive environment.

“We apologize to anyone who was offended by what we believe to be an innocent act. At Brownstown Central we are sensitive to cultural issues and promote diversity, and we will continue to hold seasonal events in support of non-profit organizations in our community.”
