Beijing’s deify-and-conquer campaign hasn’t won over many of the stubbornly independent Tibetans. Last month the Karmapa Lama, a 14-year-old boy endorsed by Beijing, escaped to the Dalai Lama’s headquarters in India. The Chinese said he had gone to pick up ritual implements, and they tried to lure him home. But so far, the teenage lama hasn’t ended his act of rebellion.
