The campaign begins full-length programming on March 3, but short MTV News segments have already beg-un touching on themes such as gays in Colorado and in the military. Recognizing a hot subject when it sees one, the network’s first in-depth feature will be “Straight From the Hood,” a documentary on gang-riddled South-Central Los Angeles. Instead of trotting out the usual cops and sociologists, the hour long program features current and former gangbangers, as well as their neighbors. Unsurprisingly, the program has no shortage of quick-cutting video montages, pounding music and, of course, celebrities: local heroes Ice-T and director John Singleton are featured prominently. After all, this isn’t “60 Minutes.”
