Back in the Scotland hotseat for a second tenure, McLeish finds his country at a low ebb and he has been tasked with the job of rebuilding ahead of the Nations League and Euro 2020.

The former Rangers and Aston Villa boss kicked off the new regime with a narrow home defeat to Costa Rica, but has stressed his focus at this stage remains on learning as much as he can.

And, with that in mind, he is set to make wholesale changes for the game against Hungary on Tuesday in the name of experimentation.

“It’ll be a different team again and we’ll look at other players,” McLeish said. “It’s not a competition, that’s why we experimented a little bit.

“I’d like to have a great win ratio but you’ve got to make some sacrifices and we’ve learned a lot. There’s a few things we can look at going forward.”

The Scots will have to plan for the match without the likes of McTominay, Hanley and Ritchie, but others will be keen to step up and show they are worthy of their place.
