A woman noticed the tops of the coffins were smashed open and alerted police. Deputies were called to the Edgewood Cemetery on Britt Road in Mount Dora on Sunday afternoon.

There, officers found vandals had disturbed four graves and attempted to access a fifth with the concrete lid of at least two of the grave sites broken into pieces and the caskets pried open, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office told ABC6 News.

Deputies said that body parts were missing from the four graves that had been accessed, adding they found evidence that suggests the incident is “very likely tied to some form of ritualistic activity.”

“It leaves very little question in their mind that this was some sort of ritualistic activity taking place here,” Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. John Herrell told FOX51.

The lid to each of the vaults weigh between 700-1,000 pounds, leading investigators to believe there were multiple suspects involved.

The discovery was unearthed after a mother and daughter said they were driving by the cemetery on Sunday afternoon when they noticed something unusual.

“In the far right corner there was a vault leaned up against a tree, so we turned around to make sure that nothing else was out of the ordinary,” Emma Boothe told FOX51.

“That’s an image that I will probably never get out of my head. I mean, I don’t think I ate anything or slept at all last night. I close my eyes and see that poor man lying there,” Boothe said. “This poor gentlemen that had been laid to rest in the 1980s. There was a pillow, but there was nothing on it.”

“It gives me goosebumps … I don’t think anyone should have to bury a family member and worry about digging them up. I think that’s extremely disturbing and I’m glad the families didn’t have to see that.”

Boothe called 911 but said the dispatcher was so shocked she needed to repeat what she said.

Vernell Parker, whose mother’s grave was distrubed, described the behavior as “wicked and evil.”

“These are the days we’re living in. I would have never even thought of something like this.”

Crews have been working to repair the damage as dozens of families gathered to the site to see if their loved ones’ graves had been vandalized.
