College all-stars from all walks of football will suit up for teams Aina and Kai, and they will be coached by former NFL coaches Rex Ryan and Mike Smith. Players will come from Slippery Rock and Sacramento State to the national champion LSU Tigers and a wide array of colleges in between.

Although LSU’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Joe Burrow, will not be on either roster Sunday, three of his former Tiger teammates will play. Two of those players—offensive linemen Adrian Magee and Badara Traore—protected Burrow. The third Tiger will be defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko, who is returning to his hometown of Honolulu.

The game first began in 1947 as an annual contest between a team made up of college players from the U.S. mainland against a team of Hawai’i high school all-stars. Beginning in 1951, the format was altered to allow NFL players to join the Hawai’i team to balance the competition.

In 1960, the game changed its format again, this time becoming an all-star college classic with players divided into East and West rosters. Team names were eventually changed to Aina and Kai.

The game was played annually at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu until 1998, when it was moved to the island of Maui at the request of a mayor. The game moved back to ALoha Stadium in Honolulu for the 2006 game, where it played for two more years.

Newsweek is the title sponsor for the game making its return in 2020.

For many players competing, it will be the last chance to wear a football uniform. For some, it’s a chance to show their skills to various scouts from different professional sports leagues who will be on hand to evaluate potential talent.

“This will be one last opportunity to get in front of every single NFL team,” Hula Bowl executive director Rich Miano said in Honolulu News Now. “Every single CFL team, XFL teams, and even the WWE is sending a representative to Hawaii.”
