While Delta is projected to reach “near major hurricane intensity” when it makes landfall, “rapid weakening is anticipated and Delta is forecast to fall below hurricane strength tonight or early Saturday and dissipate in about 3 days” after it makes landfall, the NHC noted. “Heavy rainfall will lead to significant flash flooding and minor to major river flooding in parts of Louisiana today [Friday] and Saturday. Additional flooding is expected across portions of the central Gulf Coast into the Lower Mississippi Valley,” according to the NHC....

The storm is expected to make landfall about 10 to 30 miles east of where Laura hit as a Category 4 storm in August. Delta’s major-hurricane-force winds (more than 110 mph intensity) extend up to 40 miles from its center, while its tropical-storm-force winds (between 39 mph and 73 mph) extend up to 160 miles outwards—according to a public advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Delta is the 25th named storm in an unprecedented hurricane season, in which forecasters have had to pull out names from the Greek alphabet after going through the traditional alphabetical names....

Adrian Farrington, 38, of Murphy Town on the Abaco Islands, said he struggled to stay afloat in the waters with his son, Adrian Farrington Jr., after fracturing his leg as the Category 5 hurricane battered the Carribean. The family home had been swept away as winds of up to 185 miles per hour hit the Bahamas, resulting in life-threatening rising waters and destruction. “My leg was numb, but I was still trying to stay afloat with my son,” Farrington told The Nassau Guardian....

Hurricane Ian could shape up to be one of the worst hurricanes Florida has ever seen. Storm experts have been eyeing the hurricane since it was first categorized as a tropical depression in the Caribbean several days ago. As the storm intensified, previous models showed a hard impact to the Tampa Bay area, but newer models show the storm’s eye falling further south. Regardless of where the storm hits, impacts will be felt for miles....

Hurricane Kay had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph on Tuesday, with higher gusts in some places, and was located a couple hundred miles south of Baja California. The storm was moving slightly northwestern into the Pacific at 15 mph, according to NHC. The coastline from the Baja up towards San Diego are under tropical storm watches and warnings, and storm surges could be much higher than typical storms....

Nicole is forecast to become a hurricane near the northwestern Bahamas and expected to make landfall along Florida’s east coast as a Category 1 hurricane late on Wednesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph, the centre said on Wednesday, just shy of the 74 mph to become a Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane warnings have been issued for a large portion of Florida’s Atlantic Coast, from Boca Raton to north of Daytona Beach, with tropical-storm warnings in place for other parts of the state’s coast....

The Category 4 storm hit the coast Aug. 29 as one of 21 named storms from this year’s hurricane season, and one of eight that impacted the coast, according to NPR. Larizza released an update on the case on Tuesday, stating that suspect Jean Macean, 32, had made statements to investigators consistent with having chosen his victims at random, according to local NBC affiliate WESH. Macean allegedly killed Terry and Brenda Aultman of Daytona Beach, 48 and 55, respectively, while the couple was biking home from an event on March 6. “We can’t find any connection between our victims and the defendant,” he said....
